FAQs
Find quick answers to common questions about our services. If you need more information, our team is always available to help.
What is the cheapest way to transport freight?
For global shipments, sea freight is usually the most cost-effective choice, particularly for large shipments. Although it has a longer transit time, the reduced costs make it an ideal option for transporting bulky goods.
How do I choose a good freight forwarder?
Choosing the right freight forwarder for your business involves several steps: research thoroughly, evaluate their industry experience and global reach, ensure strong risk management, confirm they offer a wide range of services, inquire about communication and customer support, and verify all necessary licenses, certifications, and permits.
Can you refuse to pay customs?
According to Section 18 of Sri Lanka’s Customs Ordinance, if you fail to pay the duties or other charges demanded by customs, your goods may be refused clearance until payment is settled. Also, under Section 37, imports warehoused and not cleared may be sold to recover outstanding amounts. For bonded goods, Section 69 requires a guarantee/surety, and regulations mandate that unpaid‑duty goods cannot be transported without security. By not paying tariffs or charges, you risk operational delays, seizure, and a negative record with customs.
Why would you use a freight forwarder?
A freight forwarder acts on behalf of businesses to coordinate and manage shipments and cargo. They serve as a logistics intermediary, using a network of trusted international partners to ensure your goods move efficiently, cost-effectively, and with minimal risk.
What does marine insurance typically cover?
Marine insurance covers vessel damage from collisions, property loss, bodily injury onboard, and assistance like towing or fuel delivery. In Sri Lanka, policies often follow Institute Cargo Clauses (A or C), including Hull & Machinery coverage. Shipowners must carry insurance for certain liabilities, regulated by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL).
How to avoid hidden freight fees?
These charges often appear as coded line items, making them hard to identify. Proactive planning and clear communication with carriers can help avoid many fees. Transportation management systems (TMS) and freight auditing tools can help identify and control these costs. Certain items are prohibited or require special approvals: • Narcotics and psychotropic substances – completely prohibited • Obscene or religiously offensive publications and pornographic material • Firearms, ammunition, and military/dual-use items – require special licenses from the Ministry of Defence • Hazardous chemicals and certain pesticides – strictly regulated • Used or reconditioned appliances (e.g., air conditioners, refrigerators) – require import licenses • Agricultural goods, plants, seeds, and food items – may require approvals from the National Plant Quarantine Service • Telecommunication and security equipment – may require approval from the TRC • Animals and pets – require clearance from the Animal Quarantine Department • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages – often restricted • Certain luxury and consumer goods (electronics, cosmetics, clothing, watches) – restrictions vary Legal framework: These rules are enforced under the Customs Ordinance (Chapter 235) and the Imports and Exports (Control) Act, No. 1 of 1969.
